Although cleaning out my shed, I discovered an old motherboard in the box(DFI 880 PTw Pentium 4 & CPU two.) I was questioning “if” this motheerboard can be upgraded? I also found an Ansusw socket7. Is there ANY hope for restore-ing these two boards? I’d like to built a personal computer “If” I can with these old parts.

The socket 7 board would most likely only be beneficial for operating Linux. The DFI board need to be in a position to deal with Vista, although it won’t run the Aero interface, I do not think. Pc specs are usually altering, so the massive issues are:

CPU – You will have to hunt about. Ebay, computer shows, hamfests, nearby personal computer builders, Craig’s list. If you have working CPUs, it’s probably not worth the bother or price upgrading, unless you would be going from a locked multiplier to an unlocked one. Even doubling the CPU speed does very little performance wise in the actual world.

RAM – adding RAM means you can run far more apps, less use of the swap file.

video cards – the most recent are PCI-E so they will not function in either board. This indicates the most recent games will not be running on them for the most component. The DFI board will have a better likelihood, but for how long is anybody’s guess.

There is surely going to be a hard drive size limit on the socket 7 board.

I wouldn’t put considerably income into either technique. I’d try to locate the parts as inexpensive as doable.

Did you select “Check CD for defects” choice ahead of attempting to install Ubuntu?
Attempt the Alternate CD which gives text based installation.

*Note: Alternative CD can’t be employed as a Live CD.

Getting installed and removed linux for many a year these items will test a seasoned windoze person.. Getting stated that you have picjked a excellent Distro in Ubuntu don’t give up..

The actual answer is right at the bottom of the kernal panic message ( use noapic string) Ah you say but how.. properly attempt this place it is the holy grail for all issues Ubuntu..

1 thing although are you sure that you distro is for a 64bit machine not i686.. this could be a cause .. if so get the correct one either through torrent or direct from Ubuntu.. they will even post out Cd’s for totally free….

Hi all, asked afew occasions and never get the correct Response that helps so ill explain in detail, hopefully somebody will read and assist me.. First off i have a Abit ip35-E motherboard Which i believed was broken because when i put memory in it kept beeping “memory error” Attempted 6x 512mb in all 4 slots “1 at a time” and absolutely nothing, After purchasing a 1gb 1 it worked, I can’t understand why 512mb do not function.. Plus my motherboard did the Double boot dilemma as-nicely So following some research i saw a patch to Bios that fixed the double boot and fixed some memory errors.. Right after opening Abit FLash menu it stated my bios was p35w62 And so on and ended with “00″ and the most recent was 18.. so after downloading the most recent and updating Now Flash menu ends with “18″ so i guess it operating, but I nonetheless get double post and 512mb Wont function.. Can you tell me if they should?

Only thing i can think is that my MB mentioned “Dual channel DDR2″ but the 512mb is single sided.. But doesnt say Only Dual channel.. please.. This is very annoying.. Thanks in advanced..

effectively Each Single sided memory i put in it Dont work, One long beep and repeats.. If i put a double sided memory in, “no matter what Slot of the 4″ my PC constantly posts and boots..

Typically if a motherboard “Supports dual channel” it means it has 4 slots (two of dual channel and two of single channel). You can only use one set at a time (either two chips in dual channel or two chips in single channel, not all 4, one in every single slot). The slots are usually color coded to denote which is which (and normally alternating). I suggest using 2 chips and placing them in one set of colored slots, if it won’t post, switch slots. Once again, check the RAM slots for color, they are generally color coded.
